Abstract

Abstract- as defined by the Oxford Dictionary states: 'abstract art, art which does not represent things pictorially but expresses the artist's ideas or sensations.' this is a fairly simple way to describe abstract art, as it is an internal processing of our ideas, feelings and sensations that give the physical outcome of an abstract painting it's beauty. I liken it to looking at a beautiful animal and seeing through to it's bones, the paring down of the external stuff- which gives way to the real truth which lies beneath.

'Remembering the Pier on the Lake'

Memories of one of my favourite happy places is Stratton Lake, in central Wisconsin. My family owns a barn and a charming old farmhouse complete with a pier which gently bounces on beautiful spring fed Stratton Lake. Many moments of summer bliss have been spent there with my wonderful (and oh so beautiful) sister Kim and her dashingly handsome husband Pat. Laughter, swimming, cooking on an open fire and taking saunas complete the weekend- and dancing of course, always dancing.

Anthropomorphic

The animals that scatter themselves across my work are quite typically presented in an anthropomorphic way. A bird might possess a great set of antlers or a cow might be wearing the funkiest pair of boots and then there are the limbs. I love human legs and arms on my cast of characters- I like them to be out of proportion and at times, wildly colorful. I also enjoy giving them bellies and breasts and other appendages. At times they are whimsical, almost comical, but depending upon what I am experiencing on a deeper level- they may be darker-a bit more sinister in their intentions. They keep me company and make me smile and are a hell of a lot cheaper than therapy.

Architectual

Architecture has always held a fascination for me. I am drawn to doors and windows in particular, as they truly are the 'eyes' and soul of a building. I am also deeply connected to a sense of 'home' which is evident in many of my works. My homes have varied from cabins in the American midwest to a Cape Dutch in a large city in Africa. They have been old and new, but they all have had one thing in common. They are unique- they speak of me in a way that I could never explain to a decorator. They ooze my scent and travels and spirituality- they connect me to where I need to be. My nesting instincts are strong- I could never be a nomad.

Contemporary Landscape

My landscape work has been described in some paintings, as an aerial view of what you see while looking down when flying, at the land and waterways below. I see geometric shapes everywhere and need nature in my life on a daily basis. I confuse where I am with where I have just been and quite possibly where I desire to be next. It all plays out in my work. There is a dreamlike quality to many of my landscapes; as if they are conveying the feeling of a place, rather than what it actually looks like to the naked eye. I suppose it is a bit like astral traveling- going somewhere while you sleep, in an altered state. Traveling has never been more fun- and there's no security check point to stress over.

Having lived on the beautiful Eastern Coast of South Africa, on the Indian Ocean, I have a new respect and love for the oceans of the world.

The colours in particular are mesmerising, in their ever changing seasons; the marine life and quirky plants that call these waters their home as well are all completely fascinating for an artist.

I am not a great swimmer at the best of times. I was raised in the Midwestern part of America where lakes, ponds and rivers are the stars of the show. Even in lakes I am a bit of a baby, but I do dally occasionally into the icy cold waters during the summer months while I am visiting family in Wisconsin. Oceans-!!! they are another cuppa tea altogether and I am in complete awe when I watch friends of mine dive into that wild frothy surf and swim away. This is the visual I would imagine the surfers, swimmers and other brave humans see when they approach the surface of the wild oceans worldwide.

Figurative

As with the animals in my work, the figures I paint, often have animal tendencies. Horns, antlers, tails and beaks will attach themselves to seemingly innocent people, which adds to the anthropomorphic tendencies that I possess. They represent the people in my life, past and present and the different parts of my character and soul. They help me to sort out my problems and chat with me while I am working. They sometimes become friends, as the characters in a good novel can be to a writer. They guide me, make me laugh, give me comfort and sometimes even frighten me into taking action when I have become complacent.

It is a healthy process to explore past work, to see how I have grown over the past twenty odd years. I am continually amazed at how I have both changed and stayed the same as an artist and a woman. I see the different places I have lived; the processes I have gone through and the pain that has catapulted me into a better life, a more authentic life. I am no longer afraid to explore the darker side of myself, as without it I would not be able to let the light in. I love what I do, I feel honored and blessed to create and to share that gift- I never take it for granted.
